FIREARM SAFETY CERTIFICATES
The Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) is a card that proves a person has completed California's required firearm safety training. It is required to purchase a handgun or long gun in California, with some exceptions.
To obtain an FSC, a person must pass a written test on firearm safety and laws. The test is 30 questions long and must be proctored by a DOJ Certified Instructor. The fee for taking the test and obtaining an FSC is $25, and the test can be taken twice if necessary.
The FSC is valid for five years. A person being loaned a firearm generally needs to have a current FSC, but an FSC is not required if the loan is less than three days and the loaner is present.
